Getting Started with MagiKids
Starting your own MagiKids group should be as easy as possible, so we’ve broken down the first steps to get yours up and running.
Step 1: Determine Your Group
As a teacher or mentor, chances are you already have a good idea of the group of kids you want to run this with. That being said, there may be some finer details to hammer out. If you’re running the group in a school, will it be an after school activity, or will it meet during a lunch or open hour? If it’s a community organization, will you have different age groups all in one group? Or would it make more sense to split them into different groups? Are there other teachers and mentors who will be able to help you out if you get more interest than you anticipate?
You don’t have to figure out every minutia right now, but at least asking these questions at this stage is a good step. That being said, be flexible! If there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that your plans will almost certainly evolve with your group- and that’s a good thing!
Step 2: Figure Out a Game Plan
The next step is figuring out how you’re going to teach the kids Magic. We cannot recommend our Sort, Build, Play curriculum enough in this regard- it’s a tried-and-true method to teach kids the game. Each group is different, however, so you’ll have to figure out how to adapt it to your unique MagiKids group.
As you’re making your game plan, we encourage you to check out the MagiKids Teacher Resource Center for various resources to help you. From taking a look at the instructional materials (which we’ll send you with your kit), to reading articles by other teachers about how they’ve taught Magic, there’s some great information available to help you out.
Step 3: Apply for a MagiKids Kit
Now you’re ready to put in your application for a MagiKids kit! Each kit contains instructional materials for your use, as well as some combination of unsorted cards and Magic accessories such as sleeves, deckboxes, and dice. The kits are free, and MagiKids covers the cost for shipping. (Kits can only be sent to clubs inside the US.)
The MagiKids Application Form is relatively quick and easy to complete. It will ask you about whether you would like more cards or more non-cards in your kit. If you’re unsure, we recommend the “about even” option for your first kit. It will also ask you about how you intend to use the kit, and how you will help raise visibility for MagiKids as you use our kit. These questions are a little for our benefit, but also for yours- we want to make sure you’re thinking about both those areas before you even begin!
After you’ve submitted your form, it usually takes us about a week to get in contact with you via the email you provided, and we usually ship within 4 weeks.
So now you’ve got your MagiKids Kit, and you’re all ready to go! But it doesn’t have to stop there:
Step 4: Check Back for Additional Resources
We’re always working to add additional resources for teachers, so be sure to check back in every now and then! Whether it’s new articles, or communicating with other MagiKids teachers via our forums (coming soon!), you never know where you’ll find that next bit of inspiration.
Step 5: Get Another MagiKids Kit!
We never said limit one! When you start to run low on resources for whatever reason, just submit another MagiKids Application. We’re more than happy to continue to support you for as long as you’re teaching kids Magic.
